...In these hills, nature`s hospitality eclipses all man can ever do. I wonder whether the scenery of these hills and the climate are to be surpassed, if equalled, by any of the beauty spots of the world.
Mahatama Gandhi
Following the demise of his mentor Swami Ramkrishna, the young Narendra (later to be known as Swami Vivekananda) while scaling the wilderness of Kumaon is believed to have said that he had seen the macrocosm in a microcosm.
This spontaneous enunciation of the young Naredra might have some spiritual connotation but it is equally true that the geographical and topographical diversities of Kumaon- spread over six districts i.e. Pithoragarh, Almora, Nainital Bageshwar, Champawat and Udhamsinghnagar - represent almost the entire globe. With hundreds of unresolved mysteries still lying within their rhythmic folds, it has got the lofty peaks of the Himalayas.
At the higher altitudes separated precisely from the tree line- as if by the masterstrokes of an expert artist -it is endowed with sprawling meadows. The worthlessness of unlimited ambitions within the confines of life may well be realized here almost intuitively. In the ancient villages situated at the foot of these meadows, where the invisible tide of time could hardly sweep anything in the centuries that have rolled by the life may still be seen and felt at its pristine best.
Right from the coquettish charms of the sparkling Rhododendrons to the somberness of stately Deodars myriad of moods of nature are here to be seen and experienced. Snuggled here amid the chains of mountains are the sprawling river valleys the social surplus produced wherein could once give altogether a new dimension to the Kumaoni art idiom and yes, nestled in the expanse of thick forests and the verdant fields of the Tarai-Bhaber is the justification of that primeval faith which had earned for earth the bestower the epithet of `Mother`.
Combining with the creativity and aesthetics of human genius the munificence of nature appears to have been telling to each visitor here that life is extremely beautiful and each and every moment of it should be lived to the fullest. The Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam has been sharing this `unique feel` with you over the years. We don`t only show you the spectacular panorama of this land but also introduce you to it, so as to instill in you the age old conviction that great things are born when men and mountain meet. |
