Nainital - History

During the times of the Raj, Nainital was an idyllic refuge of the Britishers, who used to visit Nainital to escape from the heat and dust of the plains. The name `Nainital` has been derived from two words `Naini` means `eyes` and `taal` means lake. The word `Naini` comes from the temple of the Naina Devi, that is located above the lake.

The best time visit the place is between April to June and then again in September October. The months of January to March are marked by the snowfall which is for a very short time. Pantnagar is the nearest airport situated at a distance of 71 km away from Nainital. Airport is well connected to Delhi International airport and other cities in India and abroad. Taxi services are available from airport to Nainital.

Nainital by Train :
Kathgodam is the nearest railway station, which is 35 km away from Nainital. Lucknow, Agra and Bareilly are directly connected with Kathgodam by rail.

Nainital by Bus :
Nainital is well connected to other cities by state public transport buses. Deluxe and semi deluxe luxury buses ply from Delhi (350 km), Almora (70 km), Ranikhet (60 km) and Badrinath (340 km). There are daily bus services from Delhi. The buses leave from ISBT Anand Vihar and are run by Uttarakhand Roadways.

Nainital by Road :
Driving to Nainital takes 7 to 8 hours. From Delhi, it`s highway driving throughout. NH 24 connects Delhi to Rampur via Hapur. At Rampur, turn and head north on NH 87 all the way upto Nainital. En-route halts include the Wonderland, Rwy crossing, Moradabad and The Cottage, Jeliokot.

Sattal
